Reason for inclusion: This building was one of a number in Cockspur Street that were the headquarters of major shipping lines. In the story Holmes and Watson visit the shipping office of the Adelaide-Southampton line “which stands at the end of Pall Mall”. There were no shipping line offices in Pall Mall itself, but Cockspur Street joins it.
Accessibility: Not accessible internally as now the Embassy of Brazil
Description: The façade of the building has many stone reliefs with a nautical theme and was the shipping offices of the Hamburg-America line.
Comments: Although at the junction of Cockspur Street with Pall Mall, this building was not constructed until 1905 and the story was published in 1904. We think there is a better candidate.
