Reason for inclusion: The residence of PC Rance who discovered Drebber’s body
Accessibility: Alleyway open all times, houses visible from the outside.
Description: A paved enclosure of never more than 20 houses, much improved from the date of the story, when Watson remembered the cab driver “pointing to a narrow slit in the line of dead-coloured brick. . . Audley Court was not an attractive locality. The narrow passage led us into a quadrangle paved with flags and lined by sordid dwellings …”
Remarks
Watson stated Rance lived at 46 Audley Court, Kennington Park Gate. However, there were never more than 20 houses in this confined area. Although some have been demolished the area does give a feel for the accommodation lived in by the less affluent members of Victorian society. Attributed as the location by Bernard Davies.
