    Although formally in East Sussex the house like Hurlstone is L shaped with a woodland and ponds. It does not however have a more modern wing. It was purchased by Conan Doyle’s friend Rudyard Kipling in 1902. It is possible that Conan Doyle drew on a number of houses as his inspiration for Hurlstone, as he did for Baskerville Hall.
