Reason for inclusion: The station was used by Holmes and Watson as a departure point for their cases in Kent and a departure point for the newly married Irene Adler and her husband for the Continent. The Chairing Cross Hotel which fronts the station also appears in the Sherlock Holmes stories. In The Second Stain it is where Eduardo Lucas wife attracted much attention by “the wildness of her appearance and the violence of her gestures”
Accessibility: Fully accessible
Description: The station opened in 1864 but has been substantially altered following roof collapse in 1905, bomb damage during the Second World War and a modernisation programme in 1986.
