It is believed that the character of Milverton was based on Howell. Howell was an art dealer and alleged blackmailer who died in mysterious circumstances and had his throat cut after his death. His house contained correspondence of members of high society.

The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton (dated to winter 1886 or 1899) is one of 13 Sherlock Holmes short stories in The Return of Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in The Strand Magazine in April 1904. Holmes and Watson are visited by Charles Augustus Milverton who makes his living by collecting information on members of high society and then blackmailing them. If they do not pay his asking price, he exposes them. Holmes, acting for one of his victims, who cannot afford to pay, determines to burgle Milverton’s Hampstead home called Appledore Towers to retrieve the incriminating documents. In the midst of Holmes and Watson doing so, an avenger intervenes.
