The Adventure of the Priory SchoolThe Adventure of The Priory School (dated to 1901 or 1903) is one of 13 Sherlock Holmes short stories in The Return of Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in The Strand Magazine in 1904. Watson and Holmes are taken by surprise when Dr Huxtable the proprietor of The Priory School near Chesterfield enters Baker Street and promptly collapses. The ten-year old son and heir of the leading statesman the Duke of Holdernesse, committed to his care, has disappeared, along with one of the teaching staff. Holmes and Watson travel to the school and find they not only have to deal with the boy’s disappearance but a haughty aristocrat, his influential secretary, a surly innkeeper and a moor on which there are many cow tracks but no cows.
