The story takes place in the summer of 1888. The story was published in The Strand Magazine in July 1893. A few months after his marriage Watson is asked by Holmes to accompany him to Aldershot to investigate the supposed murder of Colonel James Barclay commander of the Royal Mallows one of the most famous Irish regiments in the British Army. the story has everything : violent death, a mysterious intruder and a more mysterious animal accomplice and dishonourable conduct during the Indian mutiny many years before
Appears in many of the stories as being used by characters going to destinations in the South of England from London and vice versa.
