The Adventure of the Second Stain

The Second StainThe Adventure of the Second Stain (usually dated to 1888) is one of 13 Sherlock Holmes short stories in The Return of Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in The Strand Magazine December 1904 and Conan Doyle referred to it as his eighth favourite short story from those that had been published before 1922. Holmes and Watson are visited in Baker Street by none other than the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Lord Bellinger and the Secretary for European Affairs, The Right Honourable Trelawney Hope concerning the disappearance of a document from the Secretary’s home which if it fell into the wrong hands could lead to war. By the time the story ends it will have involved the Secretary’s wife, a noted spy Eduardo Lucas and his wife. The story contains the famous statement by Holmes to Watson: “Now Watson, the fair sex is your department”.
