Reason for inclusion: The possible location of Dr Leslie Armstrong’s residence
Accessibility: Freely accessible externally.
Description: A large townhouse on the busy Trumpington Road
Comment:
Cambridge was the home of Godfrey Staunton, the Missing Three-Quarter in search of whom Holmes and Watson make an investigatory visit. It also contains the home of Dr Leslie Armstrong: ‘a large mansion in the busiest thoroughfare’. This is most likely a description of a property in the Trumpington Road.
Correctly described by Holmes as ‘this venerable city’. Holmes’ description of Cambridge as an ‘inhospitable town’ merely refers to the quality of available hotel accommodation; leading to many errors amongst scholars who dispute Cambridge was Holmes’ alma mater.
