  • Reason for inclusion: One of the arguments for attributing Cambridge as Holmes’ alma mater was the novelist Dorothy L Sayers stating dogs were not allowed in Oxbridge colleges and as Holmes made the acquaintance of Victor Trevor when he was attacked by Trevor’s dog in his second year he must have studied at Cambridge as he would have been in lodgings at Cambridge at this time whilst at Oxford he would have been in college. However records at University show Oxford students kept dogs. Nicholas Utechin pointed out the public walk Logic Lane ran through the College so even if there had been a ban a student at University could still have been attacked by a dog.

Description: Founded in 1249. Oxford’s oldest college.

Comments: That Holmes studied at University College is unlikely. We now know that dogs were kept by students at Christ Church as well and probably at many other colleges
