  • Reason for inclusion: Appears in many of the stories as being used by characters going to destinations in the South of England from London and vice versa.

    Accessibility: Freely accessible

Description: The station was first opened in 1848 and was never designed to be a terminus, as the original intention was to continue the line towards the City of London, Consequently, the station developed in a haphazard fashion leading to difficulty finding the correct platform. The station was rebuilt in the early 20th century, opening in 1922. The booking hall was opened in 1911. The Victory Arch over the main entrance commemorated Railway Company staff who were killed in World War I.

Comment: All of the stories took place before the great rebuilding so there is not much of the current structure that Holmes or Watson would recognise.
