The Adventure of the Man with the Twisted Lip
Watson tells us that The Adventure of The Man with the Twisted Lip takes place in June 1889. It is one of 12 Sherlock Holmes short stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in The Strand Magazine in 1891. Watson rescues the husband of a friend of his wife from an opium den, the Bar of Gold, in Upper Swandam Lane. In the process he finds Holmes there in disguise. Holmes is trying to gain information about the strange disappearance of the wealthy Neville St Clair who was mysteriously seen at an upstairs window by his wife. When she returned a short time later with the police all that remained in the room were some of St Clair’s clothes and a disfigured beggar Hugh Boone who swore St Clair had never been there. Holmes believes he was murdered but that proves to be a too obvious explanation of the mystery.
